A Brief History of Shalom Respite Care Centre:
Shalom Respite Care Centre was started by Wendy Mackie and her loyal friend Ada in 1989.
Having worked for many years as a matron at Woodside Sanctuary, Wendy realised that there was a real need to offer respite care to families who look after their have a profoundly physically and intellectually disabled family member at home.
Wendy purchased a small farm outside Magaliesburg and approached Anglo American who gave her the initial funds to erect the first prefab building.
With time and sponsorship from other sources, Shalom Respite Care Centre built further buildings due mostly to generous sponsorship from the R.B. Hagart Trust.
However, it soon emerged that offering respite care on its own would not be financially sustainable, so a small number of full-time care residents were enrolled from 1995. This combination of longer and shorter care residents has proved to be a good sustainability formula. We do not accept more than 14 residents to ensure a high-level of care and most importantly to maintain a homely personalised environment.
